What I’ve Learned About Running a Business and the World of Gemstones
Share
When we took over Nature’s Own Gallery on Stearns Wharf, I knew it would be an exciting challenge — but I didn’t realize just how much I would learn along the way. Running a business, especially one as unique as a rock and shell shop, has been an incredible education not only in retail and customer service but also in the fascinating world of gemstones, shells, and natural treasures. It’s been a journey of discovery, resilience, and growth — and I’m grateful for every step of it.
Learning the Business Side
Managing a business is more than just opening the doors each morning and hoping for sales. From inventory management to staffing to marketing, there are countless moving parts that have to work together. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how important it is to stay organized and adaptable. Retail can be unpredictable — there are busy seasons and slow days — but understanding patterns and responding to them has helped me keep things running smoothly.
Building relationships with suppliers and finding the right products for the shop has also been a huge part of the learning curve. Sourcing high-quality, authentic pieces — from polished gemstones to delicate shells — takes time and care. I’ve also learned the value of pricing correctly, knowing when to offer discounts (without losing that feeling of exclusivity), and how to keep the shop feeling fresh and exciting for regular customers and new visitors alike.
A Deep Dive Into Gemstones
When I took over the shop, I had a basic appreciation for gemstones — but now, I can confidently say I’ve developed a deep respect and understanding for them. I’ve learned about the unique properties of stones like labradorite (known for enhancing intuition) and more rare finds like chrysoberyl cat’s eye — with its striking, silky band of light that shifts as you move the stone. It’s fascinating how each stone carries its own story — not just in terms of its formation over millions of years, but also in the meanings and traditions that have grown around it.
One of the things I love most is helping customers find the right stone for them — whether they’re looking for a meaningful gift or a personal piece for healing or inspiration. Seeing someone’s face light up when they discover the perfect piece of jewelry or a striking crystal for their home is one of the most rewarding parts of the of the job.
Finding Balance and Confidence
Owning a business also means knowing when to trust your instincts. Early on, I sometimes second-guessed my choices — Should I stock more of this? Should I rearrange that display? Over time, I’ve learned to listen to my gut and trust that I know what works for my customers and the shop.
There’s also an art to balancing the practical side of running a business with the creative side. I’ve had fun introducing new products and displays, creating a rewards program, and building out our online store. At the same time, I’ve learned that not everything will be a hit — and that’s okay. The key is to keep moving forward, learning from mistakes, and staying connected to the heart of the business.
Grateful for the Journey
Taking over a family-run business with such a rich history has been both humbling and inspiring. Nature’s Own Gallery isn’t just a shop — it’s a reflection of my passion for nature’s beauty and my growing knowledge of gemstones and shells. Every day, I’m learning more — about the stones, about business, and about myself. And while there’s always more to discover, I feel incredibly lucky to share this journey with the amazing customers and community that make it all possible.
Here’s to more learning, more growth, and more beautiful stones to uncover.
